Introducing new Special K Nourish™, a new kind of hot cereal with a unique multi-grain blend. Hot cereal just got sexy.
I have tried a TON of different nutrition, protein, and snack bars trying to find my favorites so I have a lot to compare these to. I guess I will go from least to most favorite. The Lemon Twist bar was my least favorite of the three flavors. The lemon flavoring had a more bitter heavy flavor than it did tangy or bright taste which I look for in lemon flavored foods. This came off more of a lemon dish soap than it did a lemon treat and I really just didn't care for it. The Cranberry Almond bar was good. I am picky about the texture of the bars I eat so it's always the first thing I notice. I like them to be crisp yet not dry and a bit chewy with out being overly so. I feel this really fit that and was much more to my liking than the lemon bar. I liked the flavor combination. I didn't feel the nutrition stats were all that impressive for the size of the bar. The Dark Chocolate Nut Delight was my favorite of course! Who doesn't love chocolate? This bar was a real treat I like the texture and flavor combinations and felt like its a nice candy bar alternative. I do however feel 180 calories is a bit high for this type and size of bar and wouldn't make a habit of eating these bars frequently, As they're too small for a meal replacement and a bit too high calorie for a snack bar. I would definitely have them around for an occasional sweet treat though.
"Mommy this is gross!" said my 4 yr old as she spit the Special K nourish bar into my hand. Special K has been a breakfast of choice in my home for years. My FAVORITE breakfast of all time is absolutely Kellogg's Special K Red Berries Cereal Bars. With just 90 calories you can't beat 'em. When tempted with this BzzAgent Campaign for a trusted brand, I absolutely couldn't say no. I must say however, I am not entirely thrilled. My typical breakfast is 90 calories and while it has it's nutritional perks, it is hard for me to justify upping my calorie intake to 170 (almost double!!) Furthermore, the fat calories are more than triple that of my normal breakfast bar. For the third and final strike, I actually agree with my 4 yr old... These are not delicious. For comparison purposes: Special K Cereal Bars: Calories: 90 Fat Calories: 15 Fiber: 3g Protein: <1g Special K Nourish Bars: Calories: 170 Fat Calories: 50 Fiber: 5g Protein: 8g As shown above, I could eat 2 of my typical breakfast bars for around the same number of calories, 20 less fat calories, and 1 more gram of fiber. So, unless I base my choice solely in the fact that the nourish bars are high in protein, I do not see a switch in our future. If you are looking for a high fiber, high protein, not low carb breakfast, this may be the one for you! If you have a morning gym routine, this would work wonderfully. I am thankful to have received this FREE from BzzAgent.com!! If you haven't signed up yet you should :)
I'm a huge oatmeal lover, as is my daughter. My son? Not so much but he was a good sport and was willing to participate in our Special K Nourish Hot Cereal taste test. Up first was the Maple Brown Sugar Crunch because I knew that my son liked that flavor and I wanted to start him off with something familiar. All three of us gave it an "okay" rating. I was really surprised because I thought that we would all love it. Maybe we are used to the sweeter versions of maple brown sugar oatmeal because we all thought that it wasn't sweet enough and didn't bother to finish the remainder of the bowl. The next hot cereal that we tried was the Cinnamon Raisin Pecan, which we all liked. In fact, I really loved it and finished the rest of the bowl for my breakfast. My son doesn't like nuts but for some reason he liked this flavor and said that he would eat it if I bought it. Score one for Special K! I liked the combination of cinnamon, pecans and raisins and thought that it rivals all other competitor's versions. Last in line was the Cranberry Almond. My daughter and I liked it enough but my son took one bite and was done. He wouldn't give me a reason why other than "I don't like it." I thought it tasted pretty good but because I liked the Cinnamon Raisin Pecan more, I probably would not purchase the Cranberry Almond in the future. I realize that hot cereal in a cup is the new thing now and is great for the convenience and easy to prepare. However, it is more expensive than the hot cereals that come pre-packaged in packets inside of a box. For the same price, I can get a box of 10 servings versus two microwaveable cups. I have been watching the prices of the Special K Nourish Hot Cereal cups at many stores and have never seen them on sale. They normally retail for close to $3 for two servings. Even with the coupon, the price is still too high in my opinion. Regarding the nutrition, I like that each cup is 190 calories (anything under 200 is good for me), has 5g of fiber, and either 7 or 8 grams of protein. These are the kinds of foods that I am happy to serve to my family.
My family eats a lot of bars (cereal, fiber, protein, etc.) so the "bar" was set pretty high when my children and I had a taste test for the Special K Nourish Bars. The overall winner was the Dark Chocolate Nut Delight. Even though my son doesn't like nuts or bars with nuts inside of them, he really liked this bar. I think it's because the nuts didn't over-power the chocolate taste and instead enhanced the chocolate flavor. It was a great combination and all of us agreed that we need to buy this bar for our household. In second place was the Lemon Twist bar. My daughter loves lemon and this bar did not disappoint her. I think that lemon is "just okay" but I also liked it, as did my picky son. The bar had just the right amount of lemon taste and I'm sure that the quinoa helped balance it so that it wasn't too strong. Coming up in third place was the Cranberry Almond. My kids did not care for it at all but I thought it was okay. The flavor wasn't strong enough so it seemed bland in comparison to the other two bars. What I really like about the Special K Nourish Bars is that they are a healthy snack that contains 5 grams of fiber (many bars barely have one gram of fiber), 8 grams of protein, and are 180 calories or less. These are snacks that my kids can take to school that will satisfy both their hunger and their taste buds. I also like that I can keep these bars in my purse or car and won't have to worry about them melting or making a mess when eaten outside of our home. I believe that Kellogg's got it right when they made the Special K Nourish Bars and I plan to buy them on a regular basis for my family.
Today at work I spied another customer eying the Nourish hot cereal bowls that we had on our end cap. Being encouraged to talk about products I am familiar, I whipped out a coupon from my bzz kit, and approached the customer. I explained that the hot cereal bowls were an excellent choice, and that I'd tried all of them (and briefly about BzzAgent). She told me she was looking for something her young daughter would like for breakfast, but she was worried her daughter would taste the quinoa in the cereal, as she knows sometimes quinoa can have a nutty flavor to it. I assured her that this was NOT the case with the product. I told her how the oats were mixed with quinoa making it healthier, but the quinoa was tasteless in it. I also told her the flavor she was thinking about was very kid friendly, and that the brown sugar was predominant in the cereal. She told me she loved the fact that the nuts were separate from the mixture, as kids can be picky about that. She also told me the price was fantastic. I told her it would be even MORE fantastic now, and handed her a coupon. In to the cart it went, smile on face!
I'm a bit of a oat meal/hot cereal nut. I often make my own oat meal and flavor it with coconut oil, nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger but this can be a tedious and time consuming. So I loved the fact that the Special K Nourish Hot Cereal's were instant, but a little more 'grown' up flavor wise. with the addition of quinoa, plus they are so convenient for on the go families/individuals! Honestly I liked all the flavors, but especially enjoyed the Maple Brown Sugar Crunch and Cranberry Almond. I like the fact you can add in the nuts/raisins/fruit/topping, which I think makes the flavor a bit more grown up and fresh, yet, my 5 year old niece LOVED stirring in her raisins and Pecans. However, I feel like there's barely ANY nuts/fruit, there needs to be more. I feel like I barely get any nuts/fruit/toppings in my bites and when you name your product 'Cranberry and Almond' I feel like I should actually be getting a lot of 'Cranberry and almond's'. I don't need a fistfull of nuts or anything, but the additions of nuts/toppings is a nice selling point so no need to totally scrimp! Besides that issue, flavor wise these hot cereals are good. I also sampled the Special K Nourish Nutrition Bars. These were great to bring on the go when I needed a quick lunch or snack. I found that I liked the Lemon Twist one best, it had a nice zing to it. The chocolate flavor worked for my niece, but as an adult I felt like the chocolate had a fake and chemical chocolate taste. The Cranberry Almond was also pretty good, but I would buy the Lemon again for sure. All in all these were some good products, I wasn't overly thrilled but with coupons and some good deals I would repurchase some of these products.
Overall, I really did like these cereals. My favorite flavor was the cranberry almond because it had a perfect ratio of fruit and nuts to cereal. The flavor was slightly tangy and the nuts added a nice crunchy texture. I thought the potion size was a bit small for my appetite but I could definitely eat one of these and stay full for a couple of hours. One thing I did notice were the directions for preparing this were a bit misleading. I followed the directions and ended up with slightly undercooked cereal. It was too runny/watery and the grains were still kind of stiff. Gross! I warmed it up for an additional 30 seconds and that gave the cereal the much needed thickness and texture that I love about cooked grains. It was disappointing but not a deal breaker. I really feel that the directions for preparation need to be revised accordingly. As far as the portion size goes, I was expecting a little more cereal in the bowl. I was worried that I wouldn't stay full for very long however I stayed full for at least 2 or 3 hours. That's not bad considering the small portion. I'm trying to watch my calorie consumption so I did appreciate that all varieties had a reasonable amount of calories. Also, these are so convenient! There are no more excuses for missed breakfasts especially for people on the go. You can easily take these to work seeing as most work places have microwaves. You could also take these while traveling assuming you are staying at a motel/hotel again since most of these places have microwaves. They really are a great, healthy breakfast option. I would like to see more fruit and nut combinations and different flavors offered. I was not too thrilled with the other flavors though. They were all good but the other two didn't stand out. I'll definitely be buying the cranberry almond variety and stocking up on these especially with warmer weather ahead. It's always nice to enjoy hot cereal on cold days!
I work from home, but on Thursday mornings I have a meeting that I have to attend. It last several hours and I often don't have time to eat before, so last Thursday I grabbed a Special K Maple Brown Sugar Hot Cereal and warmed it up at the office. Cyndee, my boss is not that adventurous with food, so she thinks everything I eat is interesting. She said what's that? I told her it was like oatmeal with almonds. Of course she then asked what do you mean "like" oatmeal. I told her it was Nourish, which was oats, quinoa, and multi-grains, so it's like oatmeal, but better for you. I said I actually like the texture better than oatmeal because it is richer and gooier. Our secretary, Beth, asked what do you mean gooier? I told her the texture was thicker than oatmeal, so it fills you up. I said it is sweeter than oatmeal too, and the almonds give it a nice crunch. Beth said maybe she should try it since she's always hungry. I said, yes, she should and it's convenient to eat on the go or in the office. Freddie, our leasing agent said he liked the cup it came in so there are no dishes. I agreed with that! Today, we had an unusual Tuesday morning meeting and Beth brought us all Nourishes! She asked if I had bought them or just had the free ones from BzzAgent. I told her I had bought some also and asked why. She said she thought they were expensive, but she liked the convenience. She said she wouldn't be buying them for all of us again, but she might keep some on hand for when she's in a hurry and on the go.
I have never been a big breakfast eater, mainly because there is just no time in the morning. I like the rest of the world, am extremely busy trying to get things ready to walk out the door and often skip breakfast to save on time. I am a coffee drinker so I normally just "take" my coffee with me. Special K Nourish warm ceral is similar to oatmeal, but has a crunch to it and is only 190 calories. Yes only 190 calories. Not only is it easy and quick to make but it also tastes great. I no longer have to sacrifice my morning breakfast because I don't have time to sit down and eat. If I am running late, and cannot take the few minutes to fix a bowl of hot ceral from Special K they have the snack bars that I can eat as well. The bars are crunchy and full of flavor. They are very convenient to just grab and go, and these too are very healthy. They tie my hunger pains over until lunch or dinner, depeneding on when I eat it. I am really satifised with the taste, crunch and healthiness of the Special K. Nourish Hot Cereal and Bars.
Kellogg's Nourish nutrition bars are nutritionally sound and I think the company had great intentions with this product. Let's face it - nutrition bars/protein bars/meal replacement bars are big business now. People are busy, and a grab-and-go bar that's nutritionally sound makes sense when time is short. The question in my mind is how much taste testing did Kellogg do on this product? The flavors are appealing, but the taste falls short - very short. I had high hopes for the bars after tasting the Nourish hot cereal - it is delicious and so nutritionally sound. I was singing the praises of Kellogg's Nourish cereal after tasting it - I expected the bars to wow me the same way. Not even close. I expected the Lemon Twist to be my favorite. It turned out to be my least favorite. The lemon tastes artificial, with a bitter aftertaste that I found very offputting. The cranberry almond was average, it wasn't unappealing, just average. It wasn't a flavor I liked enough to seek out and purchase. The Dark Chocolate Nut Delight I let me teenage son and my husband sample since they are both dark chocolate lovers. They both said the bar was completely blah and other than the nutrition benefits there would be no reason for them to eat it again because it just didn't taste good.
