Tad Williams' Shadowmarch

Categories: Media > Books,

Avatar jono

Shadowmarch is a fantasy series written by Tad Williams. The series started off as a bi-weekly installment on a website, however, people were unwilling to pay a fee to read the book online. The book was then published in a more conventional manner (i.e., a paperback book).

We had some friends over for the holidays who enjoy fantasy stories and like to read. I told them that I had recently read "Shadowmarch" and that I had really enjoyed it. I told them it had an engaging story and it would make them want to pick it up. Neither of them had heard of the book or the author before, but they both expressed interest in reading it. view more & comment

I got this book, and I realized quickly that it just isn't my thing, but it was right up my husband's alley (he's an MIT grad into the LOTR and formerly part of a roleplaying group). He read the book and in his "catch-up, end of the year email" to his friends back East, he mentioned that with 2 small children, he doesn't get much time to read but had picked up Shadowmarch and thought they might enjoy it too. view more & comment

Had a couple of friends over for the weekend. Bhakti loves novels. So we were discussing the books she had recently read. She asked me to reccomend her a couple of books to read. So i told her about Shadowmarch. I told her it was by Tad Williams and it was a scifi book. She seemed hesistant at first. so i told her its was more of a fantasy than scifi. i went on to tell her about the central character being a woman and how she copes with the sturggles in this world. this was a great book which will easily keep her entertained for a couple of weeks with its plethora of characters. i also told her that it was Tad Williams best book so far. i told her that if she like Harry Potter she would absolutely love this book. view more & comment

My friend Luci came over and we starting talking about our New Years resolutions. One of hers was to read more and watch less tv. She asked me if I had read any good books lately and I told her that I had read Shadowmarch and what a good read it was. She asked me if I got it at the library and I told her no and that I happened to have it on my shelf. I went and got it for her and she scanned thru it and asked me if she could borrow it. I told her sure. She said she is not usually into sci-fi or fantasy, but had just read Planet of the Apes and wanted to start reading more. I told her to let me know how she liked it when she was done. view more & comment

Tonight I was in a chat room where the main topic was hobbies-reading. I started a concersation with a man and a woman who were also in the chat room. We were discussing what type of books, magazines, and comics that we like to read. I thought that this was the perfect time to bzz on Shadowmarch. So I start telling them both about the story of the book and a little about the characters. He seemed really interested and she did too really. I told them that the book was already in boook stores and they should check it out. He said he would look into it for sure. She said it seemed like a good book. view more & comment

This afternoon I went to the local bookstore to find a few new books for my husband and I to read. I met a lady there who was also shopping for books for her and her husband. We were both looking fir books in the fantasy section of the store. I suggested that she read Shadowmarch. I told her that I have been reading this book and that I have almost finished it. It is an excellent book, and I don't normally read fantasy books. She was really interested in this book. As I was leaving after talking with her for a few more minutes, she was standing there reading the preface of Shadowmarch. view more & comment

I submitted a review of Shadowmarch to Amazon.com. The worst thing about this book is that it's only part one of a trilogy. I read quite a bit of fantasy when younger, but this was the first fantasy book I'd read in a few years and I was immediately hooked. There's a rich and diverse set of characters who you can identify with, despise or become intrigued with. The setting reaches far and wide. I got completely caught up in this alternate world and all of its mysteries. It is long, it is detailed, it has lots of people and places and history that you need to keep straight -- not so much of a problem when you read the book in huge chunks over a few days time, but I'm not sure how much I'll remember by the time the next part becomes available! I guess I'll have to re-read it then because I definitely want to know what happens to these characters and learn how everything is connected. view more & comment

I must admit that Shadowmarch selections did not pull me in. I was surprised to receive the whole book, but resolved to bzz! The best bzz was deciding to give the book to my significant other's youngest brother (an avid sci/fi fan). He was so excited to get the book - I was the only person to give him a book for Christmas and he does love to read. He wasn't familiar with the author, but I told him how the book had developed online and he was able to publish it. He loves epic science fiction and I think he'll be getting the next volume for his birthday. I can't wait to hear what he thinks of Shadowmarch view more & comment

While shopping at Barnes & Noble, I asked about a book titled Shadowmarch. She looked up the title on her computer & gave me the author's name and pointed to the Sci/Fi aisle. It was probably a bad time to bzz, everyone was so busy w/ after Thanksgiving shoppers. So, unfortunately, no real reaction from the employee & no interest in talking about the book. sorry. view more & comment

I was at a local bookstore buying some books for my oldest son. He had gotten some gift cards for the holidays and had compiled a list of what he wanted. Since the bookstore was on my way home I stopped to purchase the books for him. The lines were rather long but it really did not matter since there was a display of four or five copies of Shadowmarch a few feet from where I was on line and a took the opportunity to BZZ this great book right here at the bookstore. I reached over to the display and picked up a copy of the book and asked the man behind me if he had ever read the book. He had a pile of 7 or 8 books that he was about to buy and he looked like a great Bzz target. The man politely said he had never heard of the book and was it any good? I told him it was great and I had purchased two copies of it myself and had passed on my copies to numerous people. The man behind him said he had heard it was a good book and he wanted to know why I liked it so much. I told him I love fantasies and I really like the way Tad Williams writes; he makes me feel just like I am in the story! A real discussion began between these two men, the man behind him, and the two people in front of me. They were discussing the pros and cons of fantasy books, are they good for you, is escapism good, and so forth. I told them all that there is nothing wrong with escaping from our everyday life with a good book and Shadowmarch was just the book to read! I explained how much I enjoyed Tad Williams imaginative book, the characters, etc. A few other people reached over to look at the book and the man behind me with the 7 or 8 books added Shadowmarch to his pile, as did the womn in front of me. I was so glad that two more copies were about to be sold as this is a good book. A bookstore is the ABSOLUTE BEST place to BZZ a book since people who love books are the onces that are usully in a bookstore. AND when you see people buying lots fo books online you really have great BZZ targets presenting themselves to you. This was GREAT Bzz with Good results! view more & comment

I told her about Shadowmarch, and she was very interested, saying that she would check it out this weekend while at the mall. I have so much BZZ left for Tad Williams' Shadowmarch that I bet I don't get it all written up and submitted by the end of the month, but I will try. I have SO ENJOYED this book and have purchased two extra copies to pass around, have also suggested Shadowmarch for a gift for so many people to give to others for the holiday. The BZZ I am about to describe I think is better than all I have previously mentioned and reported. My dear friend and her family have been at the hospital with her grandmother since December 17th. The poor woman is 100% cognizant even though she is 96 years old but her body is just worn out and she is slowly dying, in a lot of pain too. What a horrible way to go and what a horrible thing for family members to see happening as well. The whole thing is so very sad and I will NEVER understand why a good person has to suffer, especially at the end. I went to visit my friend and her grandmother on December 22nd and I left one of my three copies of Shadowmarch at the hospital. I talked to my friends grandmother and she said that it helps to be read to, takes her mind off the pain, so I left the book. The family members are taking turns sitting at her side so that she wil not die alone and when she feels like it they read to her from Shadowmarch. The book is now half read and my friend said that everyone is enjoying reading the book for themselves as well as to Grandma(and Great Grandma too!). It has been a wonderful thing for her to lie there and close her eyes and immerse herself in the rich fantasy world. I AM SO GLAD I brought the book and I AM SO GLAD it gives the family and the grandmother a bit of comfort during this awful time. I am not sure what kind of BZZ to call this except for comforting BZZ. BUT Tad Williams' Shadowmarch has surely done a good deed by just BEING there at the hospital with this family! view more & comment
