Where Are We Anyway?

Posted by mattm on November 20th, 2005 in

After two years of watching the population of BzzAgents swell from 7,000 to nearly 120,000 (no that’s not a typo) without a stitch of marketing, I have a bunch of statistics that rumble through my head about who the BzzAgents are, what they do, if they have families, what they feed their cats, etc. The past week or so, I feel like I’ve been recited these figures more often than usual for clients and prospective partners.

One of the questions I am most often asked, is, “where do BzzAgents live?” I’m not sure what answer people are expecting to hear, but I typically say, “they mirror the population density and dispersion of the general population.”

I knew some cities we were probably a little high, and some we were certainly low (hello, Miami?!) – but for the most part, Agents were pretty much all over the place and concentrated around cities.

BzzAgents Across the U.S.

So, Friday, Seth fed our zip code data into website that mapped a circle for each zip code where a BzzAgent lives. If multiple BzzAgents live in one zip code, it mapped a larger circle. I was immediately fascinated (I always have been fascinated by maps – and yes, I LOVE Google Earth.). Naturally, the next thing I needed to do was look at a census map and see the spread. Will give you a look at that in a following post. Pretty fascinating stuff.

This is pretty cool to see, I\’m in Utah, and I\’m surprised to see that there aren\’t many, many more people that participate than actually do.

    What about Canadian BzzAgents?!

HAve you tried using a GIS program. You can load up census data along with agent data, create % data on penetratioin rates by area, and map (color coded of course) the penetration rates across the country. Pretty cool stuff that a lot of marketers are using to target geographically.

I see I\’m not alone in my little part of the world! Not by a long shot!! lol
Its funny how the little circles show on the map-because the areas where they are all bunched together, with areas around, not so filled in…makes it look like all the worker bees have left the hive and are out there buzzin\’ away and pollenating! =)
    Perfect!! lol

Happy Thanksgiving To all my fellow-Bzzers and head-hive Bees! lol

Yes, please do a map for Canada too! It should be easy enough – or does the program used only accept data for the US?
