Celebrating Sharks, Startups and the Spirit of Boston’s Tech Community

Monday, October 29th, 2012

If there’s anything more fun than seeing enthusiastic entrepreneurs get cash to build their business, it’s got to be seeing them negotiate a deal with an investor.  That’s what BzzAgent’s Shark Tank Live at FutureM was all about last week.  It was a fantastic event that exceeded all expectations – especially for the 6 startups that took the stage.

The investors, led by BzzAgent’s Dave Balter, had committed $100,000 to these startups.  But at the end of the night, almost $450,000 was distributed.  Here’s how the money was distributed in the tank:

  • Timbre – the local music mobile app was the big winner of the night, taking in a total of $350,000 – $150,000 from Dave Balter and Boston Seed Capital and $200,000 from Fred Destin at Atlas.
  • Jebbit – this unique digital marketing tool received $29,000 from Dharmesh Shah
  • Coachup – the sports coaching site received $28,000 from Dharmesh Shah, in addition to follow up meetings with CommonAngels, NextView, and Jean Hammond.
  • NBD Nano, the company that “pulls water from the air”,  received $25,000 from Boston Seed.
  • Sidewalk – the local business marketing site received $10,000 from Gus Weber of Polaris Ventures
  • Arcbazar  - the architectural design site didn’t receive a financial commitment, but they saw a lot of interest from Atlas, Google Ventures, and Intel Capital.  But they didn’t leave empty handed.  Event supporter, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), donated an expenses paid trip to London for them them to meet with investors and other multinational startups.

The timed (and obviously very well-rehearsed) presentations from each startup were fascinating, but the highlight of the night for those in attendance was the lively investor cross-examinations and the financial negotiations that played out live on the stage. Follow the play-by-play from those tweeting live from the event with #bostonsharks, and check out some pictures of the night below.

Here are some scenes from the night:

We had a lot of media interest in this as well, here’s some of their coverage:

The Boston Globe:Start-ups dive into pitches in Boston’s ‘Shark Tank

Innovation Economy: “Investor panel at FutureM conference puts $442,000 into five startups: Timbre, NBD Nanotechnologies, Jebbit, CoachUp, and Sidewalk”

Bost Inno: “FutureM Shark Tank Investors Award $442,000 to Five Startups

Entrepreneur: “How Shark Tank Is Changing Angel Investing

VentureFizz: “Great Night for Timbre, CoachUp at Boston Shark Tank

WeLoveBeanTown: “Boston Shark Tank – The Work Week’s Best Party? I Think So.

What would FutureM be without a BzzAgent bash? After the party, sharks of all kinds came out to Firebrand Saints for a night of great food and drinks like the “Great White Shark Hunt” and of course, the “Angel Investor form Hell“. We’ve got some great pictures below, but you really need to follow along with the #sharkfiletshow tweets.

6 Finalists Chosen for BzzAgent’s Boston Angel Shark Tank Event

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

After hours of deliberations, interviews, debates and dialogues, the Sharks have chosen 6 final companies to present at the BzzAgent’s Boston Angel Shark Tank Event during FutureM. These companies are competing for $100,000 from notable Boston-area venture, seed and angel investors.

Through shark-infested nomination and evaluation waters, these 6 companies have proven their passion, determination and grit. They’ve overcome bump-and-bite attacks, and are no doubt putting salve on the abrasions and serrations. The question is: In the quest for a piece of $100,000 in available investment money, will these companies receive puncture wounds or a trophy fin?

What you should know:

The six companies presenting to these sharks are:

arcbazar - Entrepreneurs:  Imdat As and Ana Batista

arcbazar.com is a first-of-its-kind crowdsourcing platform for architectural design services. At arcbazar.com, any person can launch a design competition for any scale of project: an addition to a home, a remodeling job for retail space, a design of an entire family home, a landscape project, a mixed-use development, or any other architectural design project. The client describes the project, uploads images, and provides basic information that form the basis for designers to develop their architectural concepts. The client sets the award and timeline, and in the end picks the best design solution. The award is distributed among the first three ranking design schemes.

CoachUp.com – Entrepreneurs: Jordan Fliegel and Arian Radmand

CoachUp helps athletes achieve their full potential by connecting them with great private coaches. The independent coaches who list their services on the CoachUp platform take advantage of CoachUp’s digital marketing, scheduling, payment processing, client review gathering, and sophisticated profile pages to find new clients and manage their private coaching business. It is completely FREE to sign up on CoachUp: there is no fee to join, and we don’t take any money from the coach’s earnings.  Founded by Jordan Fliegel, a former professional basketball player and longtime private coach, and Arian Radmand, an experienced sailing instructor and software engineer, CoachUp is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, and has the most sports private coaches in the nation.

Intrepid Pursuits / Timbre – Entrepreneur: Mark Kasdorf

Timbre exists to connect two painfully disconnected communities. People that like music, and local musicians. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, up to 50% of total music ticket inventory goes unsold each year. This comes at a time, when most small musicians make most of their money from ticket sales and merchandise.  Timbre has created a unique and fresh mobile app to quickly and easily let anyone sample music playing around them, and purchase tickets.  Timbre is driving towards a world where hundreds of thousands of people use the app each week to help them figure out on what they should spend money for their precious weekend evenings. Driving people to specific venues or concerts influences the success of young talent, what restaurants people go to, and what bars they drink at.

Jebbit – Entrepreneurs: Tom Coburn, Chase McAleese

Tom conceived the idea for Jebbit in December of 2010. The idea was was conceived based off three key observations: 1) The goal of every advertisement is to have a targeted audience comprehend a specific message 2) High bounce rates (often > 50%) on places like Google and Facebook mean a significant portion of an advertiser’s budget is wasted, and 3) More so than ever before, the way our society consumes media presents an opportunity to apply “verification instances” (aka a 1-on-1, brand-consumer interaction to verify the message of the ad was comprehended by the user- this was not possible with just TV, radio, billboard, etc) that will greatly increase the efficiency of advertising budgets. Thus, the idea for CPCA, or Cost-Per-Correct-Answer, was born.

NBD Nanotechnologies Inc - Entrepreneurs: Deckard Sorensen, Miguel and Andy

NBD makes use of a nano-scale surface to enhance water condensation. Mimicking the Namib Desert Beetle, our nanotechnology can be used to collect water in the most arid regions of the world. NBD uses unique surface engineering chemistry exclusively licensed out of MIT to enhance condensation. We create water from the air in the form of atmospheric water generators for human consumption. Superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces have a variety of commercial applications. NBD is targeting water harvesting by employing these alternating chemical surface features in varied micro-patterns/arrays affording unique and uncharacteristic properties. Our surface engineering solutions are based on years of research of coming from elite university laboratories in a range of fields, including materials science and chemical engineering. Applications include:

  • Enhanced dehumidification for house-hold consumers
  • Production of potable water for military operations
  • Production of water for greenhouses to support plant life
  • Production of potable water for third world nation

Sidewalk – Entrepreneurs: Mo Yehia, Avand Amiri, Brandon Weiss

Sidewalk profiles SMBs by analyzing their digital footprint. We use this data to help local sales reps sell smarter. In the future, we’ll help SMBs digitize. We have 100+ paying customers & 50+ marquee brands (Yelp, ATT, AMZN, etc) queued up for our beta. Robert Scoble called them the biggest idea at 500s.

Swimming with Sharks: 70 Companies Who Want A Piece of $100,000

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

On October 25th, some of Boston’s best and brightest investors will be getting together to invest $100,000 (at least) in startups, live and on the spot. It’s going to be a fun and wild and a hot mess – and not without its fair share of nail-biting, sweat-inducing drama. The Sharks – Fred Destin, Nicole Stata, Katie Rae, Dharmesh Shah, Joe Caruso, Mike Troiano (and some special guests) – don’t invest lightly and companies who dare to enter the tank must be on their game.

But for now, it’s the Sharks who have their work cut out for them. That’s because last Friday nominations for entries to the Shark Tank closed, and more than 70 companies were nominated to be considered for the event.

Over the next week, this list must be trimmed down to just 6 finalists. That’s right, 70 down to 6. This is going to take some serious fin-flexing. Private dossiers on each company have been delivered and early this week – at an undisclosed, dimly-lit location – doors will be locked and shades will be drawn, and the Sharks will begin the selection process.

So for everyone who has been nominated (see full list below), or knows one of the nominees, consider this your moment to make your nomination count. The hooks have been baited, the water has been chummed, and it’s now time to create a shark frenzy. Here Sharky Sharky Sharky…

The Sharks – a group who recognize persistence and persuasion as core tenants of successful startups- will consider any inbound attempt to sway their opinions. So get tweeting (use hashtag #bostonsharks). Get blogging (Sharks love to see their names in Google alerts). Get creative and you may just get yourself a spot in the Tank.
