BzzAgent Wins Most Innovative Use of Social Strategies the MITX Awards

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

BzzAgent took home one of the biggest prizes of the night at the MITX Awards in Boston yesterday. We won the award for Most Innovative Use of Social Strategies for our work with Trend Micro and the “What’s Your Story?” project.

The MITX Awards is a big deal. It’s the largest and most prestigious award completion in the country for interactive and wen innovations. This category in particular was loaded with talent. The other nominees were The Hartford Financial Services, Alflac (Digitas) and Dunkin Donuts (Studiocom).

The “What’s Your Story?” project is something we are all passionate about. Not only is it a highly effective use of social marketing for business, but it takes a new approach to an importance cause – educating kids about responsible use of social media.

Kids are all over the web at a very young age. Their friends, TV shows and celebrities are all pushing their social media sites, and kids have very little guidance on how to use them. As an Internet security leader, TrendMicro wanted to help. But they didn’t want to do it in a way that kids would tune out. It had to be different. To be effective, the voices had to come from other kids like them.

Here’s a brief case study video that tells the story of how we did it:

Thanks to the great people at Trend Micro and everyone on the team here at BzzAgent. Check out all the videos at http://whatsyourstory.trendmicro.com

BzzAgent’s Trend Micro Project is a MITX Finalist!

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

BzzAgent is thrilled to be selected as a finalist in the 2011 MITX Awards. Our work with Trend Micro for the “What’s Your Story” contest was selected in the Innovative Use of Social Media Strategies category.
Here’s a brief case study video of the project:

We are proud of the Trend Micro program not only because it is a great use of social media, but because it takes a new approach to an importance cause – educating kids about responsible use of social media.  Kids are all over the web at a very young age. All their TV shows and music idols are all pushing their social media sites at them, and often, kids have very little guidance on how to use them. As an Internet security leader, Trend Micro wanted to help. But they didn’t want to do it in a way that kids would tune out. It had to be different. To be effective, the voices had to come from other kids like them.

The “What’s Your Story” contest was born. BzzAgent worked with Trend Micro to create a contest that encouraged kids to create videos about their own experiences with Internet safety. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and blogs were used to promote the cause and make the contestants a voice for Internet safety. A microsite hosted submitted videos and viewers selected the finalists. A panel of experts selected the grand prize winner, who received a cool $10,000.

Over 140 videos were submitted from 117 countries.  The videos were so effective many prominent Internet organizations came out to support the initiative. Supporters included MTV and its A Thin Line campaign, Facebook Safety team, Yahoo Safely team, The Cyberbullying Research Center, Childnet International, and the State Attorney Generals of Ohio and Michigan.

What’s Next for 2011? Welcome to the New Era of We-Commerce

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

BzzAgent is very active in the MITX community here in New England and we were excited to be asked to contribute to their 2011 Perspectives Blog Series.

Our thoughts on the future of social media appeared on the MITX blog today. Here is a cross post of that article.

Marketing in 2011 is about the power of the group. If there is one thing we learned in 2010, it was that the collective power of people connecting in social media can drive some serious sales. In the coming year, the social media practices of motivating consumers to get their friends, family, and followers to organize around a purchase activity will be the most effective way for companies to sell online. This won’t be driven by marketers looking for another way to push messages or hoping their viral videos take off — it will be driven by Social Media’s ability to provide unique group experiences and shared value. The message may come from the marketer, but the marketing comes from the people.

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

BzzAgent has obtained exclusive video footage from the Monsters of Pork party last week.   If you missed the party, this is your chance to get a look at one of the most unique networking events you’ll ever see.

Monsters of Pork was part of BzzAgent’s sponsorship of FutureM week here in Boston.  Many told us it was one of the highlights of the week and we are excited about all the buzz it generated.  As you’ll see in Dave Balter’s opening remarks in the video below, Boston has a great innovation community and we are thrilled to be a part of that ecosystem.

The FutureM conference is underway in Boston this week.  This week-long series of events features many of the leaders in marketing, media and technology discussing what’s new and what’s next in marketing.

BzzAgent is proud to be a part of this fantastic event.  Our CEO, Dave Balter, spend some time at the FutureM headquarters this week talking about the evolution of social media, how to get people to generate word of mouth, and why you shouldn’t miss the big BzzAgent “Monsters of Pork” party Wednesday night.   There’s some great stuff here.

What Do You Think About the Future of Marketing?

Monday, September 27th, 2010

BzzAgent’s Dave Balter discussed some of his views on the future of marketing with our friends at the FutureM Conference. You can read the interview and share your thoughts here or on the FutureM event blog.

What role has technology played in shaping the transformation of the marketing industry?
Direct access to consumers.  Previously, engaging with your customer base was a 2-dimensional exercise.  You had an address database and sent postcards and catalogs or an email list and sent offers.  Now, it’s a 3-dimensional proposition: your customers are communicating all around you, via twitter and Facebook and blogs, and thousands of tools have been developed to allow marketers to have direct dialogues.

Let’s Say Cats Ruled the World and You Were Made the Ruler of All Cats…

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Last week, MITX announced the 6 Future Leaders for 2010.  They are:

  • Justin Cannon, CEO, LingtLeverages web technologies to build innovative online tools for foreign language teachers
  • Cort Johnson, CEO, DartBostonNetwork of the top, young entrepreneurs and professionals in Boston who are making awesome things happen
  • Matt Lauzon, CEO, GemvaraLeading online jewelry destination giving shoppers the ultimate custom jewelry experience
  • Christine Peterson, Social Media Enthusiast, MullenFull service modern advertising agency
  • Ali Robbins, Tuck MBA Student – Graduate Student at Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College
  • Rob Toof, CEO, ProctorcamProctoring service and management tool for distance education programs

Each of the 26 nominees answered a series of questions as part of the review.  Here’s one of the questions, with some snippets of my favorite answers:

Question:  Let’s say cats ruled the world and you were made the ruler of all cats.  Cats hate water.  What would you recommend be done with the oceans?

Snippet #1:

I would take my cue from the tobacco industry and begin paying movie executives to include scenes of glamorous kitties enjoying a quick dip in the hot-tub or getting their coats wet during a relaxing stroll on the beach. I would recruit the most celebrated cats from YouTube and hire them for a series of TV spots entitled “Water we so afraid of?” I would fund the construction of public pools and subsidize swimming lessons. Finally, I would incorporate “water education” into cat primary school curricula. If I were filling a bit more malevolent, I would recruit a cadre of cat historians to convince the public that fear of water is a recent phenomenon spurred by modern complacency. We would rewrite the textbooks to litter the cat historical narrative with subtle interactions with water; did you know that the reputed cats of ancient Egypt actually held an annual swimming race across the Nile? Acceptance of water would become a retro liberal trend that would slowly build a wide adoption.

cat-on-beach-1Snippet #2:

During their ruling, I’d ensure their safety and help drive a cat migration inland. I’d preserve the coasts by renting vet clinics on the beachfront (cat’s won’t rule forever – got to preserve the beaches). I’d make sure that cats were motivated to move inland by building a destination made entirely of brown grocery bags with holes cut out in the corners, moving shadows and fountains of milk – tentatively named Sin Kitty.

If cats needed to cross the ocean, I’d offer a boat service, likely a “cat-amaran” for safe transportation across bodies of water – coach equivalent would be a warm radiator near the window and first class would be under a bed, away from any view of water. Spokesperson for the boat service I’m thinking Puss In Boots from Shrek. He has sex appeal and would sooth the most nervous of kitties.

Snippet #3:

I would institute mandatory swim training class in elementary schools, training our kittens that getting wet need not be frightening.  I would propose that we build a series of bridges, boats and submarines so that we may enjoy the beauty that is the ocean without getting wet.  Finally, I would encourage each and every citizen to construct a small aquarium in their home stocked with fish to remind them that the sea is home to some of our greatest treasures (we’d call them victory aquariums, if you’re wondering).  My fellow felines, there is nothing to fear but fear itself.  And dogs.  Meow.

Snippet #4:

In keeping with the theory of Darwin’s survival of the fittest, I would use Foursquare to determine which cat would be mayor of respective areas of the sea.  This tactic would allow the cats full authority to re-name areas as they see fit, perhaps to the “Catlantic Ocean,” or the “Bay of Kittens.”  The mayor of the greater Dubai area would build out more islands into the ocean to establish play communities for the kittens and the active senior cats.  It would be a purr-fect world, suitable for even the most anti-aquatic cat.

Snippet #5:

If I had to “do something with the oceans” I would cover them with huge pristine white couches because then the cats would be on those couches and over their fear in no time. Cats seek out anything white and recently vacuumed.

How would you have responded?
