[Infographic] A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Likes

Monday, November 12th, 2012

It’s been said that people remember 10% of what they hear and 20% of what they read, but about 80% of what they see.  If you are looking to build widespread advocacy around your brands and products, photo sharing sites like Pinterest and Instagram are some of the best ways to encourage customers to tell their stories. Photos are compelling content.  Social media posts with photos generate more response and interactivity than any other type of post.  Now that more than half of all mobile phone users have smartphone, the opportunity for your customers to post candid photos of your product in action hs never been greater.

But like any other type of social media, this isn’t about marketing carefully controlling the entire message.  Professionally staged product shots, images from ads and stock photos with air-brushed actors are going to turn people off here like they would on any social media site. The best way for brands to use these sites is to make it about the customers.  Encourage them to share their photos about your product at home and out with their friends and family.  Your customers should be the stars of your photo galleries. Here’s how it’s done:

[Infographic] The Social Media ROI Solar System

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

You could say there’s a universe of ways people measure the ROI from their social media marketing. Some of the more popular methods, like counting Facebook “likes” and re-tweets, have very little meaning to the CFO, while other newly developed formulas around engagement can be, well, rather creative.

Only one method, the analysis of sales revenue generated relative to the program investment, delivers ROI in the way it is meant to be measured –  in financial terms. If you think of that as the center of the measurement universe, here’s how the rest of the social measurement solar system might look:

The State of Social Sharing in 2011

Friday, December 16th, 2011

I’m sure you’ve seen the AddThis links on articles and posts across the web.  If not, take a look at the sharing icons on your favorite content sites. They say they’re on 11 million of them.

With all that sharing running through their plug-in every day, they’ve got a good pulse on how people prefer to share stuff with friends online.  AddThis created an infographic that could be considered as the state of social sharing in 2011.

Here are some of the takeaways:

  • According to their analysis, Facebook made up 52% of all sharing on the web this year.  This is up from 44% last year and 33% in 2009.
  • Greg Cypes, the director of product at Clearspring, the company behind AddThis, told the NYTimes that the sharing of a link, an update, or a photo on Facebook is much more impactful for driving traffic.
  • Although Twitter sharing jumped 577% this year, it’s a long way behind.  It accounted for just 13.5% of sharing in 2011.
  • Chart climbers this year include huge gains from Tumblr and Google +1.
  • The other big area of growth is with mobile. Sharing on mobile devices grew 6X this year. This is driven mostly by tablets – iPad sharing grew about 600% surpassing sharing on the iPhone last summer.
  • On the other hand, Digg and Myspace were the major sites that lost the biggest share of sharing.
  • The most popular day for sharing is Wednesday
  • The most popular time of day is 9:30am Eastern

[Infographic] The Actions, Motivations and Influence of Brand Advocates

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Brand advocates are one of a brand’s most important resources.  They lead frequent discussions about products and their actions persuade the opinions and purchase decision of many others.  To help marketers understand who these people are, what they do, and why they do it, we conducted an in-depth study with Dr. Kathleen Ferris-Costa at the University of Rhode Island, College of Business Administration.

The study provided a wealth of great data on advocate behaviors, interests and motivations.  We found that brand advocates are 83% more likely to share information about a product than typical web users, and 50% more likely to influence a purchase.  Advocates enjoy solving problems and helping others make better purchase decisions.  They are 75% more likely to share a great product experience and three times more likely to share product opinions with someone they don’t know.

These stats, and many others in this study, show that advocates act and think very differently from typical web users – they are a different breed of consumer.

The findings from this study make up the first “Field Guide to Brand Advocates”.   Check out the infographic below and download the complete study at http://u.bzz.com/FieldGuide.
