After hours of deliberations, interviews, debates and dialogues, the Sharks have chosen 6 final companies to present at the BzzAgent’s Boston Angel Shark Tank Event during FutureM. These companies are competing for $100,000 from notable Boston-area venture, seed and angel investors.
Through shark-infested nomination and evaluation waters, these 6 companies have proven their passion, determination and grit. They’ve overcome bump-and-bite attacks, and are no doubt putting salve on the abrasions and serrations. The question is: In the quest for a piece of $100,000 in available investment money, will these companies receive puncture wounds or a trophy fin?
What you should know:
- These 6 impressive (and daring) companies will be presenting on October 25th @ 4 PM @ the NERD Center as part of FutureM.
- They beat out more than 70 other companies to get a spot at the event (there are SO MANY incredible companies in that list of 70, it’s worth checking out every single one.)
- Each of the finalists have a shot at obtaining a piece of the $100,000 in investment money committed from some of Boston’s finest investors (the $100,000 may be distributed to more than 1 company).
- The companies will present their business and their financing terms live in front of an audience. The Sharks will then have the opportunity to invest right there, on the spot.
- The Sharks are: Nicole Stata,Dave Balter, Fred Destin, Lucy McQuilkin, Mike Troiano, Joe Caruso, Katie Rae, Dharmesh Shah with Mass Challenge’s Karl Buttner moderating.

The six companies presenting to these sharks are:

Intrepid Pursuits / Timbre – Entrepreneur: Mark Kasdorf
Timbre exists to connect two painfully disconnected communities. People that like music, and local musicians. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, up to 50% of total music ticket inventory goes unsold each year. This comes at a time, when most small musicians make most of their money from ticket sales and merchandise. Timbre has created a unique and fresh mobile app to quickly and easily let anyone sample music playing around them, and purchase tickets. Timbre is driving towards a world where hundreds of thousands of people use the app each week to help them figure out on what they should spend money for their precious weekend evenings. Driving people to specific venues or concerts influences the success of young talent, what restaurants people go to, and what bars they drink at.
Jebbit – Entrepreneurs: Tom Coburn, Chase McAleese
Tom conceived the idea for Jebbit in December of 2010. The idea was was conceived based off three key observations: 1) The goal of every advertisement is to have a targeted audience comprehend a specific message 2) High bounce rates (often > 50%) on places like Google and Facebook mean a significant portion of an advertiser’s budget is wasted, and 3) More so than ever before, the way our society consumes media presents an opportunity to apply “verification instances” (aka a 1-on-1, brand-consumer interaction to verify the message of the ad was comprehended by the user- this was not possible with just TV, radio, billboard, etc) that will greatly increase the efficiency of advertising budgets. Thus, the idea for CPCA, or Cost-Per-Correct-Answer, was born.
NBD Nanotechnologies Inc - Entrepreneurs: Deckard Sorensen, Miguel and Andy
NBD makes use of a nano-scale surface to enhance water condensation. Mimicking the Namib Desert Beetle, our nanotechnology can be used to collect water in the most arid regions of the world. NBD uses unique surface engineering chemistry exclusively licensed out of MIT to enhance condensation. We create water from the air in the form of atmospheric water generators for human consumption. Superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces have a variety of commercial applications. NBD is targeting water harvesting by employing these alternating chemical surface features in varied micro-patterns/arrays affording unique and uncharacteristic properties. Our surface engineering solutions are based on years of research of coming from elite university laboratories in a range of fields, including materials science and chemical engineering. Applications include:
- Enhanced dehumidification for house-hold consumers
- Production of potable water for military operations
- Production of water for greenhouses to support plant life
- Production of potable water for third world nation
Sidewalk – Entrepreneurs: Mo Yehia, Avand Amiri, Brandon Weiss

None of the contestants have jumped out and rabbed me for The Shark Tank, but if I am going to root for one, I am going for Sidewalk. Surely there are better ideas out there!
