Straight Off The Assembly Line
Created by RMJ80Michigan is a place of great contrasts, especially between the upper and lower peninsulas. There is enormous natural beauty in the forests and waterfalls, lakeshores and sand dunes. These lie in the Upper Peninsula, where one is reminded of Oregon rain forests. The trees are smaller, but so are the mosquitoes! Winding roads are lead by streams of light that sneak through gaps in the leaves. With gold and maroon tips, each tree appears to have been dipped into a palette of paint. Cross Mackinaw Bridge and reach the Lower Peninsula. Driving farther southeast, small towns seem deserted and crops dry. Memories of Michigan majesty fade as one reaches a run-down Flint, Detroit. Power lines become the sky with a drive down Eight Mile on a dreary day. Beneath trash, broken picnic tables and overgrown grass, there is a glimpse of a Belle Isle Park. A fantastic fountain features as the centerpiece, where children run, and Muslims kneel to pray. The water appears cleansing, until taking a closer look. Algae has turned the stagnate liquid green. Where the feature has dried up, it is full of chip bags, paper cups and beer bottles. Motor City has become a city of struggles. The moving assembly line appears in "Straight Off the Assembly Line." Ford Motor Company first implemented the assembly line invention, at the Highland Park plant in Michigan, U.S. in 1913. The new technique allowed individual workers to stay in one place and perform the same task repeatedly on multiple vehicles that passed by them. This system helped the company far surpass competitors and create more affordable vehicles. Today, voices on the radio speak of Ford?s recent layoffs and buyouts. According to United Press International, "The U.S. car business (in general) has announced nearly 90,000 job cuts this year." In "Straight Off the Assembly Line," the decline of the American auto companies are illustrated through workers reaching the end of their journey with current employers and falling into an unknown future. Safety nets may or may not be waiting, as some are compensated for their hardship. The American automotive companies are not to blame for the deterioration of Michigan's Lower Peninsula cities; it is simply a cause and effect situation. While the Ford Motor Company looks for a way to become profitable again, executive chairman, Bill Ford, admits that with its "Way Forward" plan, individual workers and their communities will face painful consequences.
